About

The 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is a modern frontline formation established in 2023 as part of the country’s rapid military expansion in response to the full-scale invasion. Although the brigade number has historical precedent, the current unit represents a newly formed and combat-ready force built around contemporary operational requirements. Designed as a mechanized formation, it combines infantry, armored vehicles, and artillery to conduct both defensive and offensive operations across active sectors of the front, with a focus on mobility, coordination, and sustained combat effectiveness.

The brigade is commanded by Illia Yehorov, under whose leadership it has developed into a capable and adaptive unit despite its relatively recent formation. Like many newly established brigades, it has benefited from a mix of experienced personnel and newly trained soldiers, allowing it to quickly integrate into frontline operations while building its own combat identity and cohesion.

A notable aspect of the 22nd Mechanized Brigade is its adoption of modern battlefield technologies, particularly the extensive use of unmanned aerial systems. The brigade employs reconnaissance drones to monitor enemy positions, adjust artillery fire, and maintain real-time situational awareness, while also utilizing strike UAVs to engage targets with precision. This integration of drone warfare enhances the brigade’s effectiveness by reducing reaction time, improving targeting accuracy, and enabling more coordinated operations between infantry and supporting elements. As a result, UAV capabilities have become a key component of the brigade’s operational approach, reflecting the broader transformation of Ukrainian mechanized units into technologically enabled combat formations.
