About

The 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is one of the country’s long-established combat formations, with its modern history beginning in 1992 following Ukraine’s independence, while its deeper lineage traces back to Soviet-era units formed during World War II. Over the years, the brigade has developed into a seasoned and resilient mechanized force, playing a continuous role in Ukraine’s defense, including active participation in operations since 2014 and throughout the full-scale invasion. As a mechanized brigade, it combines infantry, armored vehicles, and artillery to conduct sustained combat operations across a wide range of battlefield conditions.

The brigade has been led by several commanders during the course of the war, reflecting the intensity and demands of frontline operations, with leadership roles adapting as the situation evolved. Among its recent commanders is Yuriy Madyar, under whose leadership the brigade has continued to operate as an effective and battle-hardened formation. Its personnel are known for their experience, cohesion, and ability to hold and maneuver in some of the most contested areas of the front.

A key aspect of the 28th Mechanized Brigade’s effectiveness in modern warfare is its integration of unmanned aerial systems into daily operations. The brigade активно employs reconnaissance drones to monitor enemy movements, identify targets, and direct artillery fire with high precision. In addition, strike UAVs are used to engage enemy positions, equipment, and logistics, allowing for efficient use of resources and minimizing exposure of personnel. This emphasis on drone warfare significantly enhances the brigade’s situational awareness and combat capabilities, demonstrating its adaptation to the evolving technological demands of contemporary conflict.
