About

The 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is one of the country’s most experienced and historically rooted combat formations, officially established in 1992 following the creation of Ukraine’s independent military, while tracing its lineage back to World War II-era Soviet units. Over decades of service, the brigade has developed into a highly capable mechanized force, actively participating in key military operations since 2014 and continuing to play a significant role throughout the full-scale invasion. As a mechanized brigade, it integrates infantry, armored vehicles, and artillery into a cohesive formation designed for both defensive operations and offensive maneuvers in complex battlefield environments.

Throughout its history, the brigade has been commanded by a number of experienced officers, reflecting both its long-standing legacy and the demands of continuous combat operations. Among its notable commanders are Volodymyr Hordiychuk, who played an important role in shaping the brigade during earlier stages of the conflict, and Ivan Harkusha, representing more recent leadership as the unit adapted to the evolving conditions of modern warfare. Under successive commanders, the brigade has maintained a reputation for resilience, discipline, and operational effectiveness on some of the most contested sectors of the front.

In line with the broader transformation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the 30th Mechanized Brigade has increasingly incorporated unmanned aerial systems into its operational framework. The use of reconnaissance drones enables continuous monitoring of enemy positions and movement, while also supporting accurate artillery targeting and coordination between units. Additionally, strike UAVs are employed to engage enemy personnel, equipment, and fortified positions with precision, reducing risks to ground forces. This integration of drone technology has significantly enhanced the brigade’s situational awareness and combat efficiency, allowing it to remain an effective and adaptive force in the context of modern high-intensity warfare.
