36th Marine brigade

The 36th Separate Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is a key formation of the Ukrainian Naval Infantry, established in 2015 as part of a broader effort to rebuild and expand marine capabilities following the events of 2014. Designed for amphibious operations as well as sustained combat on land, the brigade combines infantry, armored elements, and artillery into a versatile force capable of operating in coastal regions, urban environments, and frontline positions. Over time, it has developed into a resilient and combat-experienced unit, playing a significant role in Ukraine’s defense during both the early stages of the conflict and the full-scale invasion.

The brigade has been commanded by several experienced officers throughout its service, including Serhii Volynskyi, who became widely known during the intense fighting in Mariupol in 2022. Under such leadership, the brigade demonstrated high levels of endurance, coordination, and determination in some of the most challenging combat conditions. Its personnel have earned a reputation for discipline and resilience, particularly in prolonged defensive operations where maintaining cohesion under pressure is critical.

In modern operations, the 36th Marine Brigade has integrated unmanned aerial systems into its combat framework as an essential component of its effectiveness. The use of reconnaissance drones allows the unit to monitor enemy activity, gather real-time intelligence, and coordinate artillery and maneuver elements with improved precision. Additionally, strike UAVs are employed to engage enemy forces, equipment, and fortified positions, increasing operational efficiency while minimizing risk to personnel. This incorporation of drone technology enhances situational awareness and battlefield coordination, enabling the brigade to adapt to the evolving demands of contemporary warfare while maintaining its role as a capable and flexible marine formation.
