About
The K-2 formation, now developed into a regiment-level unit within Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, traces its origins to 2017, when it began as a small reconnaissance group formed by motivated volunteers. Over time, the unit expanded through continuous combat experience and organizational growth, evolving from a small team into a battalion, and later into a regiment-level formation. This progression reflects both its operational effectiveness and the increasing importance of specialized, technology-driven units within the Ukrainian military. Built around adaptability and battlefield innovation, K-2 has become a notable example of how modern Ukrainian units evolve directly from frontline experience.
The unit is commanded by Kyrylo Veres, who founded the original group and has remained a central figure in its development. Under his leadership, K-2 has cultivated a strong identity focused on initiative, tactical flexibility, and the integration of modern combat methods. The unit’s personnel include experienced operators, analysts, and technical specialists, enabling it to conduct complex and coordinated operations across multiple operational environments.
A defining feature of the K-2 unit is its extensive use of unmanned aerial systems as a core element of its combat doctrine. The formation actively employs reconnaissance drones to maintain continuous surveillance, identify enemy positions, and provide real-time intelligence to supported units. In addition, it utilizes strike UAVs, including FPV systems and loitering munitions, to conduct precise attacks against armored vehicles, artillery, logistics nodes, and fortified positions. This integrated and persistent use of drone technology allows the unit to deliver consistent battlefield impact while minimizing risks to personnel, highlighting its role as a modern, highly adaptive formation operating at the forefront of unmanned warfare.
