About

he Kraken unit is a special operations formation operating under the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, created in 2022 in response to the urgent need for highly mobile, combat-capable volunteer forces during the early phase of the full-scale invasion. Formed in March 2022, the unit quickly established itself as an elite force composed of motivated personnel with prior military experience, as well as volunteers who underwent accelerated but intensive training. From its inception, Kraken has been oriented toward high-risk missions, including reconnaissance, sabotage, direct action operations, and rapid offensive maneuvers in contested areas.

The unit is commanded by Kostiantyn Nemichev, who played a central role in its formation and operational development. Under his leadership, Kraken gained recognition for its aggressive tactics, flexibility, and ability to operate independently or in coordination with other Ukrainian forces. The unit became particularly known for its participation in operations in eastern Ukraine, where it contributed to both defensive actions and counteroffensives, often in complex urban and semi-urban environments.

A key feature of the Kraken unit is its integration of modern warfare tools and approaches, including extensive use of unmanned aerial systems for reconnaissance and targeting. The unit leverages drones to enhance situational awareness, coordinate assaults, and conduct precision strikes, reflecting a broader shift within Ukrainian forces toward technology-driven combat. Combined with strong internal cohesion and a distinct identity, Kraken continues to function as a highly adaptive and effective special operations unit, playing an important role in Ukraine’s ongoing military efforts.
