About
The “Phoenix” Battalion is a specialized unmanned aerial systems unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, established in 2022 during the early phase of the full-scale invasion to meet the growing demand for precision strike and reconnaissance capabilities. Formed as a response to the rapidly changing nature of the battlefield, the battalion was built around the concept of drone-centric warfare, prioritizing flexibility, rapid response, and technological effectiveness over traditional force structure. Since its creation, it has developed into a focused and capable formation operating in some of the most active sectors of the front.
The battalion is commanded by Dmytro Oleksiuk, who holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and oversees the unit’s operational and tactical development. Under his leadership, the Phoenix Battalion has strengthened its role as a precision strike element, combining skilled UAV operators, technical specialists, and support personnel into a cohesive and highly coordinated force. The unit’s structure enables it to conduct independent operations as well as provide direct support to larger formations.
Drone usage is the central pillar of the Phoenix Battalion’s operational doctrine. The unit активно employs reconnaissance UAVs to conduct continuous surveillance, identify targets, and generate real-time intelligence for battlefield decision-making. In addition, it utilizes a wide range of strike drones, including FPV systems and loitering munitions, to engage enemy personnel, armored vehicles, artillery systems, and logistical assets with precision. This integration of unmanned systems allows the battalion to deliver consistent and efficient battlefield effects while minimizing risk to personnel, reinforcing its role as a modern, technology-driven combat unit at the forefront of Ukraine’s evolving warfare capabilities.
